Episode Guide
Each weekend, the players assembled to play what has been designated as an episode. Each week, a recap of the most recent episode’s happenings was posted to allow those who have been missing for many or few episodes to get a feel for what they have missed.
Episode 1
Date: June 4, 2005
Attendance: Andrea, Leigh, James, Jason
Summary: The morning chill was still in the air as the sun crept over the horizon to shine down on the capital city of Hightower, the gem of the country and continent of Gantara, residing in the southern hemisphere of Oerth, known as a far away land across the Ocean of Storms. Larger than Flanaess, but smaller than Oerik, this continent was discovered by human explorers centuries ago, and colonized by adventurers looking for fame and fortune. Even as Overlord Lucian III and his wife Lady Casandra stepped out onto the terrace of Castle Hightower into the morning air overlooking their realm, neither would have noticed a humble monk of the Order of the Red Belt moving along the paved streets to the Museum of Antiquities, bringing several historical scrolls to one of the monastery’s benefactors, Lord Quinn Mentzer. As Jackal 13 arrived with his scrolls, he bumped into a familiar face at the museum, Alheara Darkmoon, and the two walked in together to find Lord Mentzer. The duo found Mentzer speaking with a historian named Thomas Newhouse about a southern expedition to update archaeological records by categorizing the ancient tombs in the duchy of Valderin. Newhouse would be responsible for the archiving, but he would need protection during his travels to an area less civilized than Hightower. A warrior from the local fighter guild named Tuaca Serpenthelm was hired for security, and an elven cleric of Corellon Larethian named Luthien Elensar would provide healing and translation of more difficult tomb inscriptions. Collecting their supplies, Newhouse and his wagon met with the party at the southern gate, and traveled for weeks through the duchy of Marrick, into the duchy of Dekelor. As the first location for recording was not connected to the Royal Road, Newhouse insisted upon traveling overland into the eastern portion of Dekelor, closer to the coast, so the party could arrive at the town of Southwell just past the border separating Dekelor from Valderin. Unfortunately, the overland travel did not go unnoticed by a local tribe of kobolds who accosted the party after they had settled down for the evening. Tuaca and Jackal 13 were quick to initiate combat, with Alheara and Luthien provide ranged attacks with bow and spells. The combat ended with the kobolds slain, and Newhouse unsettled by the unaccustomed violence. With the merry thoughts of a scenic journey through the wilderness ended, the PCs decided to take a more direct route to Southwell.
Combat: While bedding down for the evening, the PC were able to repel and kill five kobolds.
Episode 2
Date: June 18, 2005
Attendance: Andrea, Leigh, James, Jason, Jerry
Summary: Gell Thokk sat praying on his boulder, as he had done for the past two days, with the morning sun cresting the horizon just outside of the small town of Gilfree. As a half-orc cleric of Kord, Gell had been tasked by his order to meet a contingent of northerners who needed a guiding hand as they traveled around the Grand Duchy of Valderin, looking to update archaeological records by categorizing the ancient tombs in the area. Leadership indicated the group wanted to travel to Southwell, but Gell was to meet with them in Gilfree as the area around Southwell was ripe with goblins. Back at the camp, the party watched for any remaining kobolds lurking in the area and burned dead bodies on a pyre. Realizing the combat had unsettled Newhouse, Luthien calmed his nerves, ensuring the timid historian the party was there to protect him. Traveling overland again, the PCs made good time even with poor weather conditions. More so, the group was able to see their first bale tempest as it tore a path of destruction through the land they rested on the previous evening. Arriving in outside of Gilfree, Gell was quick to announce himself indicating the PCs should get supplies in the town before traveling on further. As the party found lodging at the Gold Dragon Inn, Alheara announced she had a change of heart about this trip and wished to return to Hightower, indicating she was content with waiting in Gilfree until a ranger was hired to return her home. Uncertain about if the party had enough manpower to continue traveling, the PCs fell into an agreement with a local warrior named Kragen, who agree to take Alheara’s place. Moving on the next day, the party encountered a raiding band of goblins, where Kragen was quick to show how his addition to the party would add something different compared to how Alheara provided support. The battle was one-sided as the monsters did not provide much of a challenge. After burning the bodies and receiving healing from Luthien, the party continued onto Southwell, but deviated from their course after the elven cleric noticed portents from a dream from the previous evening. Needing to take shelter from a bale tempest, the party found a rural church of Kord and sought refuge. Initially believing the holy house to be empty, PC shenanigans brought forth an angry apparition of Kord who challenged the party to avenge his prifit’s death. After searching, the body of a murdered cleric was found beneath the altar in a hidden priest hole.
Combat: A raiding party of six goblins was dispatched.
Episode 3
Date: June 25, 2005
Attendance: Andrea, Leigh, James, Jason (as DM), Jerry
Summary: Finding the murdered body of the prifit of Kord changed the perspective of the party in so much that the group was stymied by how to move forward. The debate about leaving the corpse for someone else to find vs. backtracking to Gilfree was tossed around with the party making the right decision about returning to a town to report to the local constabulary except continuing to Southwell. Bring the body with them, the party headed southwest into the hill country in northern Valderin using the sun as their guiding point, as the need for a ranger became more and more evident. Weather seemed to favor their journey as there were no bale tempests to contend with and the PCs were able to arrive in Southwell after a long day off-road. Staying at the Sticky Wicket Tavern, the party contacted Constable Bursa and turned over the body of the dead priest. With no church of Kord in town, Bursa indicated he would let the lord mayor know of the situation, but mentioned his hands were full of dealings with local matters, and that he could only suspect Martock Mankiller as being the prime suspect behind the priest’s death. Martock already had a bounty on his head for homicide, and the party allowed Newhouse to visit the local sage while the PCs tried to collect the bounty. Nosing around town, the party had a better idea of where to start to look with some folks telling them of how suspected members of Martok’s company come into town often enough to spend their money at the local taverns. Heading southeast, the party navigated the hill country and went in the general direction the barkeep at the Travelers’ Keep Tavern said to go. As fate would have it, the PCs stumbled upon a lone brigand, wandering the hills doing some day drinking. Suspecting it to be Martok, but knowing his treasure trove might be nearby, the party followed the warrior back to a neighboring crag, where several voices could be heard yelling at him for leaving his post. As night fell, the party decided to wait until dark to move forward on a cave opening using the full moons to light their way. Sneakiness gave way to combat, and the party pushed into Martok’s lair, fighting several brigands as they retreated to the rear of the cave. After several strong tactical moves, the PCs killed the brigands and recovered their loot. However, evidence found at the scene indicated Martok was not one of the bodies, as found messages denoted he had fled to his base: the Scorpion’s Lair.
Combat: Four brigands were eliminated, but Martok was not one of them.
Episode 4
Date: July 2, 2005
Attendance: Andrea, Brett, Leigh, James, Jason, Jerry
Summary: It had been years since Braglorin Qalvanda had trekked through the area now known as Gantara, even before the Overlord’s men had started prospecting the land for settlements, but as an elf ranger who enjoyed wanderlust, he appreciated a sense of human nostalgia, while looking for the cache of arrows he stored in a nearby cave years ago. As he came upon the familiar outcropping, he noticed signs of battle and a half-orc priest giving praise to Kord for successfully smiting evildoers. Figuring that a prifit of Kord would not be such a bad person, Braglorin hailed him, and exchanged pleasantries, with both sides stating their reasons for their interests in this particular cave. Hearing a new voice, other party members joined the conversation with Tuaca immediately hiring the elf for his ranger services. Checking on his arrow stash (but not needing any), Braglorin scraped up some loose silver coins as a down payment on his future services and began to rally the party to take cover when his keen elvish senses recognized the signs of a bale tempest in the area. Waiting for the skies to clear, the PCs burned the bodies and left the cave barren with their new ranger leading them back to Southwell to speak with Constable Bursa and to retrieve their bounty. Bursa was not as generous as previously thought, but he made it clear the main part of the bounty was for Martok and not just his gang. Disappointed, but richer that the previous morning, the party spent the rest of the day upgrading their armor and restocking provisions. During the evening hours, war drums could be heard playing from the south, which coincided with Luthien’s dream about a severed toe she found on a blood-soaked path. With Newhouse indicating there were ruins to be explored in Byton, the party tasked their ranger to find the best way through the foothills as there was no road leading to their destination. The first night of travel was soggy with rains forcing the PCs to make a cold camp earlier than they would have wanted to. While hunting for game in the morning, Braglorin came upon evidence of a goblin warband heading west. Deviating from their original plan, the party left Newhouse in a nearby cave, and chose to track down the goblins. The easy to spot warband, later found to be the Bloody Toe tribe, appeared to be creeping around a human homestead. The party instigated combat by attacking the warband’s rear flank, and in the resulting chaos, slaughtered the entire goblin horde.
Combat: Ten goblins from the Bloody Toe tribe were destroyed.

Summary: I haven't heard from you in quite some time, stranger. All of us are doing great, some more than others. Episode 53 will be this Saturday at Chris & Cindy's place. The PCs are trying to make it through the last leg of a extremely trap-filled dungeon. Paranoia has crept in as it seems just about every door the rogue says is safe, happens to cause more casualties. Lots of problem solving, but major combat this weekend.
